DOWNTOWN FORT MYERS RIVER DISTRICT - In 1885 Fort Myers was incorporated and in 1904 a series of building booms fostered new residential subdivisions beyond downtown. Over time the original wood buildings in downtown area were replaced with masonry and brick buildings, many of which have been renovated and still stand today. In 1924 the construction of the Edison Bridge, named after Fort Myers' most famous winter resident, was completed, spanning the Caloosahatchee River. Thanks to the continued efforts towards preservation and revitalization, Downtown Fort Myers has become a unique place hosting many special events almost every weekend. The streets are lined with restaurants, unique shopping, art, theater, music, and the Harborside event center. There are many beautiful condominiums most offering gorgeous views of the Caloosahatchee River ranging in price from the high high 100's to over 2 million. Most recently plans for two new luxury waterfront condominiums are in the works. In addition there are quaint older neighborhoods such as Dean Park which is walking distance to the downtown hub. The latest exciting news is the approval of a new convention center hotel to be built over the next 2 years which will increase property values significantly and bring opportunity for new businesses and employment.
